La Roseraie de Vrigny is closed until further notice, due to a serious accident and due to flooding. Thank you for your understanding. 〰️

Welcome

La Roseraie de Vrigny

We welcome you to the dynamic commune of St. Georges-sur-Cher, in a wine-producing area at the heart of the principal chateaux – we are just 5 minutes from Chenonceau – and within easy reach of the world-famous ZooParc of Beauval and the annual Garden Festival at the Chateau of Chaumont-sur-Loire. Nonetheless La Roseraie remains a rare haven of peace and quiet, rarely found in today’s world, without TV or background music.

You can opt for an independent stay in la Petite Ecurie, the Studio which we have created in the converted stables opposite the house, and which now forms one of our four characterful B&B rooms.  (Breakfast, included in the price, is normally served in the house.)  Whichever room you choose, you will be given a warm welcome by Rosalind and John.

We propose a generous breakfast, consisting normally of fruit juice, stewed or fresh seasonal fruit, often from our own orchard; muesli, yoghourt, locally sourced breads and patisserie, accompanied by a selection of home-made jams from our store-cupboard, freshly made coffee, hot chocolate or a selection of specialist teas.

It is also possible to book dinner, which will normally consist of at least four courses, specially prepared for you, using locally-sourced fresh produce, with our own vegetables and fruit when available.  Vegetarians can be accommodated. Advance booking essential.

After a busy day exploring the region, we offer an opportunity for relaxation in this wonderful haven of peace. The different gardens round the house are graced with around 160 roses; we have a formal vegetable garden, inspired originally  by the famous potager at Villandry, and the property is divided by a pretty little stream , crossed by a Chinese-inspired bridge, leading to the park which is home to a very juvenile arboretum, the orchard and an avenue of quinces and hornbeams.

Rosalind, for the last 15 years, has been an honorary member of the ConfrĂ©rie des Vignerons des Coteaux du Cher. For those with time to spare and an interest in how our excellent Touraine wine is produced, she will be delighted to offer suggestions for informative wine tours and tastings for individuals or small groups.

If English is not your first language, while you are here, you can take the opportunity to practise it with your Anglophone hosts.

  • Spanning the Cher River and surrounded by formal gardens and trees. This castle is shaped by women: royal wives, mistresses and queens. The grand gallery spans the River Cher, which during World War II marked the dividing line between Free France and Occupied France - many people took advantage of the southern gates to gain access to Free France.

    5km, 8 minutes.

  • The largest of the Loire castles makes a striking impression. Don't miss the grand staircase, reputed to have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci, and the roof terrace. Walk through the public part of the surrounding park, now a national game reserve, and you'll find observation posts where you can spot deer and wild boar.

Travel another 10 km to the church of Nouans-les-Fontaines and the Chartreuse du Liget, with its private chapel in the woods, decorated with 10th century frescoes.

    28km, 32 minutes

  • From the banks of the river or from the bridge over the Cher, admire the view of the medieval houses grouped around the church under the protection of the ruined keep, one of the many fortresses built by the feared Foulke Nerra, the "Falcon Black ". The Keep still dominates the city in a menacing manner and is worth a detour to be lit up at night. Beneath the Keep is the small but fascinating museum of local history and archaeology. Also worth visiting in Montrichard is the Heavy Duty Museum with its unique collection of vintage trucks, old fire trucks and other historic vehicles.

A few kilometers further, in Bourré, you can enjoy underground tastings of excellent wines combined with a guided tour of the galleries where the stone used for the construction of the castles was extracted, or visit the neighboring troglodyte site where the mushrooms are still cultivated using traditional methods and admire the unique underground “village” whose creation, in high relief, occupied the sculptor for ten years.
